Kagerou Project is a multimedia series focusing on a group of children known as the "Mekakushi Dan." It currently consists of a series of vocaloid songs(many of which have music videos), a manga, a light novel series, and an anime. While the manga, novels, and anime are commonly misunderstood to be adaptations of the songs, each part of the series is canon to the others--they just cover different timeloops. This is pretty firmly confirmed canon, and images from other parts of canon even show up as one character's memories in the anime.
The story begans hundreds of years ago with a Medusa known as Azami. Though she grew to hate humans through her first experiences with them, she eventually managed to fall in love and have a child with one. Unfortunately her family's continual mistreatment at their hands didn't endear her to the rest of his species and eventually caused Azami to retreat into a world of her own creation--the Kagerou Daze. Her family, however, did not follow her. Her daughter Shion eventually had a child of her own with a human, and chose to live in a cottage in a forest with her daughter Mary for the rest of the extensive livespans their Medusa blood granted them. Mary was advised not to stray from her home, because even if she was only 1/4th Medusa her mother feared for her safety. Though humans had been part of it, as a whole they had never been kind to their family. Shion's fears were hardly paranoia, either. While playing outside one day, Mary was attacked by a group of boys. Shion noticed in time to rush to her aid and use her eyes to turn them to stone, but because she was only half Medusa it was too much for her body to handle and the shock killed her. Unfortunately, her actions seemed to be in vain as Mary died from head trauma.
But this wasn't the end of the story for them, as Azami pulled them into the Kagerou Daze in an attempt to save them. She unfortunately could only save one of them and Azami had to give up one of the snakes from her hair to do so--the one that controlled the Daze itself. Mary was thus possessed by the snake and allowed to leave and have another chance at life. This, however, meant the Daze was no longer in Azami's control, and from that point onward it began to perform similar feats.
The requirements for a miracle revival from the Daze are generally this: two people must die together on August 15th. One of them is possessed by one of Azami's snakes and given another chance at life. Each snake has a different power, and grants said power to the incident's survivor. When someone uses one of these abilities, their eyes turn red, hence them being referred to as "eye powers."
Those rescued by the Daze eventually found their way to each other. The Mekakushi Dan was founded by the adopted older sister of the first three children with eye powers to come together, in an attempt to have them play superhero and turn their strange powers and red eyes into a positive. Over time, the Dan became a serious attempt to find others like them, try to understand their powers, and rescue their loved ones who died with them and were still trapped within the Daze. The fact that many of them didn't remember the circumstances of their deaths anymore left them pretty in the dark about their situation. Mary herself was one of the first brought in, and became very close to the group's members.
The Dan was not without an adversary, however. The snake possessing a man named Kenjirou had the ability to take over his body at night, and thus used him to further his own plans until the day where each timeloop came to an end was upon them. On that particular August 15th he transferred himself to a child who had been given a super strong body, and used it to kill all of the members of the Mekakushi Dan in front Mary until she reset the timeline in despair. This tragedy repeated over and over an unknown number of times, until finally the group managed to defeat him and bring this final timeloop to a happy resolution. The details of this ending are currently extremely vague.
